Resolving black screen / internal error has occured / laggy / slow / disconnection issue with RDP

Having trouble connecting your Windows machine to a recent Windows Server? You're not alone. Microsoft is aware of an incompatibility issue between certain Windows versions and the latest Windows Server releases. Although a permanent fix (patch) isn't available yet, there are solutions that can get you connected in the meantime.

Solution 1: Leverage the Windows 10 Store RDP App

Instead of the default Remote Desktop Connection client, try the RDP app available in the Windows 10 Store. This app might offer better compatibility with newer Windows Server versions.

Solution 2: Tweak Group Policy (For the Connecting PC, Not the Server)

This solution requires administrator privileges.

  1. Open the Group Policy Editor on the PC you're using to connect to the server (not the server itself).

  2. Navigate to: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Connection Client.

  3. Locate the setting "Turn Off UDP on Client" and set it to "Enabled."

By implementing one of these solutions, you should be able to establish a connection to the newer Windows Server despite the current incompatibility.
